‘Viridian EV’ 8-80 Amp EPCs (Electronic Protocol Controllers) for Tethered & Free Cable EVSEs

All Prices Include VAT & UK Postage

Non-UK Orders must pay for additional postage

If you want to make your own EVSE (electric vehicle service equipment AKA charging point/station) then you’ll need this specially designed EPC (electronic protocol controller) conforming to the IEC 62196 charging standard.

I strongly recommend you watch this youtube video on the subject of DIY EVSEs...

ZCW EVSE Build Day video...

The main function of the EPC is to control the maximum current that the EVSE will ‘advertise’ to a connected EV.  The EV then agrees a mutually agreeable charging current with the EPC and charging then commences by the EPC closing a small internal relay which connects mains power to a power contactor inside the EVSE which, in turn, connects the mains supply to the EV’s charger.

Rated for 32A (maximum) use, it can be configured to tell the EV it can charge at any level between 7A to 32A (dependent on model) in 1A steps by using a simple resistor (assuming the EV is compatible - any EV fitted with either a Type 1 or Type 2 charging socket should be).  One version is compatible with tethered installations only and the other with ‘free cable’ installations.  It can also be configured to work with a tethered cable - or both free cable and tethered by means of a suitable switch.

A ‘free cable’ EVSE is one where the EVSE has a only a Type 2 socket and, consequently, a separate Type 2 to Type 1 or 2 cable (normally supplied by the EV driver) is required to connect EVSE to EV.  This version has a plug lock facility but it is for solenoid-type locks only (the lock is NOT included). It is NOT compatible with motorized lock types for various reasons.  The manual (below) suggests both types can be used but is out of date.

In the event of a mains power failure mid-charge, on restoration of mains power and once the EPC has completed it boot-up procedure (about 30 seconds), charging will recommence without manual intervention.

All types come supplied with a link fitted between ‘0V’ and ‘IC’ terminals, inhibiting the output. For use at maximum rated current, this link should simply be removed.  If you want to use the EPC at a lower current than the maximum then the link should be replaced with an appropriate 1/4W resistor.  This should be in accordance with the installation manual which can be downloaded here.

By modifying this link, users are assuming responsibility for the correct design and use of their EVSE.  EVBitz.uk will not accept liability for injury to living creatures nor damage to any property arising from the incorrect use of this product.

All versions are fitted with a bright LED which indicates the EPC status (see table below).

PLEASE NOTE:- 32A RCBOs will generally only operate reliably at 30A max.  If you want a 665 ohm resistor to limit the output to 30 amps, let me know.

If used in portable equipment intended for use with 13A mains sockets, the ‘IC’ resistor should be selected to provide no more than 10A of current (ie using a 249 ohm or less resistor) otherwise the 13A plug/socket will overheat.  A suitably rated RCBO device must also be used in this scenario to provide the correct level of protection whilst avoiding unnecessary tripping.

Please Note: All EVSEs (especially portable ones) should be regularly examined for signs of excessive heating and, if found, remedial action taken otherwise there is a serious risk of fire and resulting damage and/or injury - EVEN DEATH!

Should the Tethered version be out of stock, it is quite simple to the use a ‘free cable’ version in its place.  It simply requires an additional resistor, but it is more expensive.  Please ask me about this if your need for an out of stock tethered EPC is urgent.

The EPC has a 35mm DIN rail mount and its dimensions are:- 90mm high, 36mm wide (2 modules) and 57mm deep.  The front of the unit is 53mm from the face of the DIN rail and all these dimensions exclude the LED indicator which protrudes 2mm from the front face.  The ‘tethered’ version weighs 95g (110g boxed) and the ‘free’ version weighs 110g (135g boxed)

Min. operating temperature: -30C.

EVSE 13A/16A Auxiliary Socket Kit

A kit to add a 13A socket to an existing EVSE.  This allows the installation to be used to charge EVs fitted with a 13A plug - or to connect a hoover/pressure washer, 12V battery charger, etc. The EVSE box will need a flat area 60mm square to fit the kit’s socket.  Alternatively, you could mount another box next to the EVSE to mount the socket in or supply your own outdoor socket.  There is an option for the relay and wiring only.

Unfortunately, there are too many possible ways of wiring up the relay so I can only provide the terminals required attached to 0.5m of suitable connecting wire.  Your electrician will have the necessary equipment and supplies to complete the kit installation.

You can also order the sockets and relay separately.

Note: Unless these items are purchased as part of a larger order, postage must be added - 2kg max per £3 postage ‘order’.

The socket is 50mm x 50mm and the outside protrusion is ~13mm, internal ~22mm.

The relay is 50mmx 40mm x 30mm
